The Search for Truth: Beyond “My Truth”

In a world filled with shifting perspectives, the question Pontius Pilate asked centuries ago still echoes today: “What is truth?” It’s a question that has haunted philosophers, sparked revolutions, and even inspired pop culture icons like Johnny Cash, who wrote a song about the search for truth back in 1970.  

The Evolution of an Idea

For many years, we were told that truth is relative or that no truth is absolute. However, as thinkers pushed back, it became clear that the statement “there is no absolute truth” is itself absolute, making it self-contradictory. Because these ideas failed under scrutiny, they have largely fallen out of favor.  

Today, we face a new trend: the rise of “My Truth.” On the surface, it sounds empowering, but it often signifies a lack of interest in objective reality. When someone says “that’s my truth,” they are often signaling that they are only interested in their own thoughts and feelings and are closed off to outside perspectives.  

A Foundation in the Trinity

If we look to the Bible, truth is not a flexible concept or a personal preference; it is rooted in the character of God. The document “What is Truth?” points out that we see truth reflected in all facets of the Trinity:  

• Jesus Christ: He explicitly stated, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life”. He was born into the world specifically to testify to the truth.  
• The Holy Spirit: Described as the “Spirit of truth,” the Helper is sent to testify about Christ.  
• God the Father: He is recognized as the “true God” who provides the understanding we need to know what is true.  

The Source of Your Belief

So, where does “My Truth” actually come from? The text suggests it often stems from worldly sources, “fleshly feelings,” or the influence of the “father of lies”. When we speak only from ourselves, we are often seeking our own glory rather than the objective reality of God.  

Ultimately, the question “What is Truth?” leads to a personal decision. We are left with a choice: Do we anchor our lives in the Word of God, or do we follow the ever-changing tides of social media and personal impulse?
