The Power of Initiative in Leadership and Life

True leadership isn’t just about following instructions; it’s about seeing what needs to be done and taking action before being asked.  

In the business world, the most valuable employees aren’t those who settle for the status quo or offer the excuse, “I’m doing the best I can,” when faced with a flaw. Real growth—both personal and professional—comes from a willingness to do whatever it takes to move forward and improve the process for those we serve.  

The Biblical Standard of Initiative

The Bible doesn’t call us to make excuses; it calls us to action. Jesus gave us clear directives: Love God, love people, and make disciples. Fulfilling these commands requires us to “step out and step up,” which is the very definition of initiative.  

We see this clearly in the life of King Hezekiah:

• Going Beyond the Minimum: While previous kings “did right” but left idols in place, Hezekiah took the initiative to remove the “high places” and restore true worship.  
• Proactive Preparation: He didn’t just respond to crises; he foresaw the Assyrian threat and prepared Jerusalem in advance.  
• Courageous Leadership: He encouraged his people to be strong and courageous, reminding them that “the one with us is greater than the one with him.”  

Moving Beyond the Status Quo

Initiative is like a child learning to do yardwork. They move from standing around and waiting for instructions to observing the environment and acting independently.  

Where can you apply this today?

• In your spiritual life: Increasing discipline in devotions or starting with prayer.  
• In your community: Approaching new people at church or introducing yourself to those on the “edges.”  
• In discipleship: If you’ve been mentored, it may be time to “step up and step out” to mentor someone else.

The difference between a good leader and a great leader is the initiative to do the whole job.
