Why Me, Lord? A Tale of Two Perspectives

Why Me, Lord? A Tale of Two Perspectives

The Common Cry

We typically hear the phrase “Why me, Lord?” from someone discouraged by negative circumstances. It often stems from the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” despite the biblical truth that none of us are inherently righteous on our own.

The Praise of Undeserved Grace

There is another way to use this phrase. When we consider the grace, mercy, and peace we receive through Jesus Christ, we can ask, “Why me, Lord? Why did You choose me to receive such a gift when I did nothing to deserve it?” This shift transforms a statement of complaint into a deep expression of worship and gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ.

The Purpose of the Test

When trials do come, perspective remains vital. The Apostle James encourages us to consider trials as “all joy” because the testing of faith produces endurance, leading to a life that is “perfect and complete.” Whether it is a test allowed by God, like Job’s, or a specific test of faith, like Abraham’s call to sacrifice Isaac, these moments are designed for a purpose far greater than our immediate comfort.

A Better Outlook

God has provided so much protection and grace that we should strive to never complain when things don’t go our way. By getting our perspective right, we can begin to see every “Why me?” as an opportunity to recognize God’s hand at work—either in His protection or in our perfection.
