The Shepherd’s Calling: Leading Like David and Jesus

The Shepherd’s Calling: Leading Like David and Jesus

By: Eldon Kibbey

In our modern world, we are obsessed with “leadership.” Yet, the Bible frequently bypasses this term in favor of a much humbler image: the Shepherd. While “leadership” is only found once in the Bible (NASB-95), “shepherd” appears 59 times. By looking at the lives of David and Jesus, we find a roadmap for how we are called to lead our own “flocks” today.

The Foundation of Character and Skill

In Psalms 78:70-72, we see that God chose David from the sheepfolds to shepherd His people. The scripture notes two distinct traits in David’s leadership: integrity of heart and skillful hands.

To lead effectively, one cannot exist without the other. Integrity ensures we are a “man after God’s heart,” while skill ensures we can practically guide those under our care through the challenges of life.

The Power of Relationship

A shepherd’s authority isn’t just about a title; it’s about a relationship.

  • David relied on his history with God—the God who delivered him from the lion and the bear—to face Goliath.
  • Jesus identified Himself as the “Good Shepherd” who enters through the door and gives His life for the sheep.

For us to be true leaders in our businesses or families, we must first be followers of the Great Shepherd. We must look to the power of the Holy Spirit to live out the life of Christ through our daily actions.

Applying the Shepherd Model

We all have a “flock”. It might be a corporate team, a small group, or our children. Our mission is to:

  1. Nurture: Care for the needs of those we lead.
  2. Guide: Use the “pasture of His Word” as our primary resource.
  3. Multiply: Lead by example so that those in our flock eventually become shepherds in their own.

David was a flawed leader, but he was a shepherd who pointed people toward God. As we die to our own selfish ambitions, we find the strength to truly serve others.
