Did you ever wonder what The Great Commission is?

It is so much a part of the fabric of CBMC and of the message of the church that I attend, that I have never questioned it.  I have studied it and written about it and attempt to practice it.

Unfortunately, according to a recent Barna report, that is not the case in many of the churches across America. 

The report showed that more than half of U.S. churchgoers have not heard of the Great Commission. Additionally, even when presented with a list of passages, 37 percent don’t recognize which well-known passage typically goes by this name.

I shared that with a man at breakfast and he was shocked!  He asked the man next to him if he knew what the Great Commission was, and he said, “No,” giving credence to the information from Barna!

So, what is The Great Commission?

The well-known passage of Matt 28:19-20 is usually quoted as The Great Commission:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

These were the last words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, directed to His disciples, as their marching orders.  They followed this edict in the Book of Acts.

Many have taken the word “Go” literally, and have gone to other places, just as the disciples were told in Acts 1:8:  “…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

In the Greek, the literal translation is Going therefore, make disciples.  So, the command is to make disciples, while we are going.  In other words, we are to be discipling others as part of our daily activities, as we are going in our families, in our workplaces, in our churches, neighborhoods, and communities.

The Great Commission says that we are always to make disciples, where ever we are.  Please remember that!  Moreover, engage in discipleship right where you are.  There are potential Timothys everywhere!
